Plaigerism and Fanwork Theft
by HarborRat on 11/15/06 - 08:36AM

If you are posting work that is not your own, under any circumstance, you are going to be labelled a thief.  This is especially true of work that has been published on the internet, since it is easier to link to the original source than it is to copy and paste it under your own name.

Fanfiction is property of the author and any reposting or translations posted under a different name is classified as plagiarism.  Simply listing the genuine author's name in a disclaimer or footnote is adding insult to injury.  If you wish to see a story posted on a different site or a translation available, then contact the author and ask them to post it.  If you are volunteering to translate, then YOUR name should be the footnote since you were providing a service and not the creativity and intellect behind the creation of the piece.

Fanart posted in any altered or unaltered form without permission is unacceptable.  If the artists has granted permission for you to manipulate their work, then you MUST credit that author.

Just because the author/artist does not speak or read your language does not mean it is acceptable for you to take advantage of them.  If you wish to share their work with your peers, link to it.  If there is any way it can be misconstrued that the posted piece is yours, then you will be classified as a thief.

More authors/artists have stopped writing or drawing because of theft than you  realize.    Having to spend your time and energy fighting thieves instead of creating new works is enough to make this hobby unappealing.  It is a hobby, this is free entertainment provided to you by other fans and if you have any respect for their work then you will not distribute it as your own.

Thankfully this only applies to a slim portion of our fandoms, however it is important for everyone to consider.  If you write/draw or simply appreciate the fanworks of your community than you will remain aware of this growing threat.  If you see stolen fanworks, please notify the author immediately so action can be taken.  If your work has been stolen, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Oh, and by the way, one of the members on THIS SITE is the person who just today uploaded an Italian translation of my story as if it were her own. Her penname on this site is Chen (Chen06 on FFN). Just wanted to let you know - she hasn't posted anything here yet, but I'm going to keep an eye out.

I'm happy to say that Chen06 took her Italian copy of my fic off the FFN site. However, the original culprit, Li Ping (Ping on this site) has not taken any of hers down - she's copied 4 of mine, and if you look at her profile, every single one of her stories in German or Italian is a translation of someone else's story. I've contacted the respective authors and made them aware.

Hi Harbor Rat. I just wanted to keep you posted on what's going on. Li Ping has still not taken down the translations of the fics she stole from me and a few other authors. The other author Chen06 took her story down from FFN, but thanks to another author I found that she posted a few of my works and another author's works in German on a German fanfic site AnimeXX. The FFN admins. still haven't done a thing (and right now there are all kinds of bugs in that site so I don't know when they'll get to it). The moderator of the LJ Stop Plagiarism community has contacted Li Ping and I've made her aware of Chen06. Just wanted to keep you posted. Thanks again.

Oh, Candi, I forgot to remind you that I copy and paste my stories I updated at fanfiction.net to lunarspears. Hope this won't mistaken my updates here from fanfiction.net.

And people, if you want to translate any of my fics into another language just e-mail me. There's already one reader who did E-mail and PM me about translating my fic into spanish and I gave the reader my permission.

I think I may have found a touch of plagiarism in the archive... I'll send you the details and let you make the call on it.
